4th of July Safety Tips for Your Home and Property

The 4th of July is a time for celebration, family gatherings, and spectacular fireworks displays to celebrate our great nation’s birthday. However, amidst the festivities, it’s crucial to prioritize safety to ensure that your holiday is enjoyable and accident-free. Hubler Financial Services Insurance is committed to helping you protect your home and property, so we’ve compiled essential safety tips for your family to enjoy a safe and fun Independence Day.

     1. Fireworks Safety

Fireworks are synonymous with the 4th of July, but they can pose significant hazards if not handled properly. Here are some key tips:

Leave it to the Professionals:  Attend public fireworks displays conducted by trained professionals. There are many events planned around our communities to view Fireworks, including festivals in Greenwood and Franklin Indiana the week of July 4th. Visiting a public firework show is safer and often more impressive than most home displays.
Legal Compliance: Ensure that fireworks are legal in your area before purchasing or using them. There are local regulations for the days and times that fireworks are allowed in the Summer and there may even be bans in place at times that there is an increase risk of wildfires. You can check out your local firework policies around Indy here: https://www.in.gov/dhs/get-prepared/fire-safety/fireworks-safety/
Adult Supervision: Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities. Even sparklers, which can reach temperatures of 1,200 degrees, can cause severe burns. Of the thousands of firework injuries that occur in the United States each year, about 30% are children under 15 years old.
Safe Distance: Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly. Maintain a safe distance from buildings, dry grass, and flammable materials. Do not try to approach a “dud” firework to re-light it.
Water Source/ Fire Extinguisher: Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby in case of fire or malfunction. It is also always recommended to keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
Disposal: Soak used fireworks in water before discarding them to prevent accidental fires.

    2. Grilling Safety

Grilling is a popular activity during the 4th of July celebrations. Follow these tips to ensure safe grilling:

Location: Set up your grill at least 10 feet away from your home, deck railings, and overhanging branches. Be sure that your grill is on steady and level ground.
Cleaning: Clean your grill regularly to prevent grease fires. Remove any fat buildup from the grills and trays.
Supervision: Never leave a lit grill unattended. Keep children and pets away from the grilling area to avoid accidental burns.
Proper Tools: Use long-handled tools to avoid burns and splatters. Do not use your grill if there are any missing/ broken pieces.
Fire Extinguisher: Have a fire extinguisher or a bucket of sand nearby in case of an emergency. Never use water on a grease fire.

     3. Home Safety

With increased foot traffic and outdoor activities, it’s important to secure your home and property:

Secure Doors and Windows: Lock all doors and windows to prevent unauthorized access. Consider installing security cameras for added protection.
Lighting: Ensure your property is well-lit, particularly in areas where guests will be walking. Motion-sensor lights can deter intruders and prevent accidents.
Clear Pathways: Remove any obstacles or tripping hazards from walkways and yards. This includes garden hoses, toys, and decorations.
Pet Safety: Keep pets indoors or in a secure area. The loud noises from fireworks can cause anxiety and lead to unexpected behavior. Your vet may prescribe medication to assist in keeping your pet calm. Make sure fencing and gates are secure before letting your pet outside off leash. Large pets may escape through window screens when scared, so it is recommended to keep windows closed around them.

    4. General Safety Tips

General awareness and preparation can go a long way in ensuring a safe celebration:

First Aid Kit: Have a first aid kit readily available. Be prepared to treat minor injuries such as cuts, burns, and insect bites.
Stay Cool and Hydrated: Stay hydrated, especially if you’re spending time outdoors; encourage guests to drink plenty of water. Dress for the Indiana Summer heat and don’t be afraid to go inside to cool down as needed.
Sun Protection: Apply sunscreen and wear protective clothing to guard against sunburn. Don’t forget hats and sunglasses for added protection. Be sure to re-apply sunscreen often when swimming!
